This presentation focuses on vapour intrusion mitigation system (VIMS) theory, data collection, and design. As an industry, we have moved beyond the “poke and hope” approach and now rely on mathematical models, improved assessment metrics, and innovative design strategies. These advances allow us to effectively protect building occupants from vapour intrusion risks without unnecessary overdesign. This presentation will explore how to strike a balance between technically defensible VIMS design and the regulatory frameworks that guide our work.
Darius Mali has over 12 years of experience in the vapour intrusion field, working on projects ranging from residential properties to U.S. Department of Defense facilities exceeding one million square feet. He specializes in advanced assessment approaches, including high-volume sampling, building pressure control, and applying building science to develop accurate conceptual site models (CSMs) and effective mitigation designs. More recently, his work has focused on PFAS vapour intrusion, assessing sources and exposure pathways for regulatory clients.
