Beyond Data: Conceptual Site Models in Site Characterization and Remediation

Online
Guy Patrick & Reidar Zapf-Gilje

Description

Students who complete this course successfully will be able to:

  • Understand and apply conceptual site models at virtually every contaminated site
  • Understand subsurface behaviours of common and unusual site contaminants
  • Characterize, visualize and communicate site stratigraphy
  • Effectively incorporate groundwater science into the CSM
  • Acquire and assess relevant data sets to characterize contaminant fate and transport
  • Make QA/QC a meaningful exercise
  • Use the CSM to write efficient and effective reports
  • Link the CSM with effective remediation strategies

Required Texts, Materials, or Equipment

  • Reference materials and PDFs of hand outs will be made available following registration
  • All course replays are available in the course platform

Work/Homework

Participants will complete weekly assignments, which are designed to apply new concepts to realistic situations and data sets.  In addition, video lecturettes and documents will be made available for viewing and review in preparation for each upcoming learning module.

About Instructor(s)

Guy Patrick & Reidar Zapf-Gilje

Guy Patrick:

Guy Patrick is a contaminant hydrogeologist and environmental engineer with over 30 years of experience in the assessment and remediation of contaminated sites in soil, sediment and bedrock environments. As Managing Director of Patrick Consulting Inc., a founding member of GeoEnviroPro, and a Contaminated Sites Approved Professional in the Province of British Columbia, Mr. Patrick’s expertise includes strong technical review and project oversight, with a focus on the development of innovative approaches in the assessment and clean-up of contaminated sites. As a senior technical specialist, he provides leadership in the investigation and remediation of sites contaminated by inorganic and organic chemical solids and liquids, including dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPL) such as coal tars, chlorinated solvents and mercury. His work experience includes technical review and litigation support on a number of projects in Canada and the US. In addition to consulting, Guy is an Adjunct Professor at UBC, where he has co-taught course in environmental engineering and contaminant hydrogeology.

Reidar Zapf-Gilje

With over 35 years’ experience in environmental assessments, remediation and management, Reidar has directed and managed many large contaminated soil, groundwater and sediment projects from the initial investigations to implementation of remediation and/or risk management solutions. He provides specialist review and advice on brownfield remediation and redevelopment projects in Canada and abroad. In his role as Chair of the Contaminated Sites Roster of Professional Experts, Reidar led the development of the contaminated sites approved professional (CSAP) review system, designed to assist the Ministry of Environment with issuance of regulatory instruments. With a desire to see the development of a true community of contaminated sites professionals, Reidar founded GeoEnviroPro to bring practitioners, regulators and others together to share information and learn from one another’s experiences. Reidar has also taught part-time in UBC’s departments of Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences as Adjunct Professor.
