Soil Vapour Intrusion – Evolution of Practices, Current Issues and Future Directions

Soil Vapour Intrusion – Evolution of Practices, Current Issues and Future Directions

Online
Dr. Ian Hers, Hers Environmental Consulting (HEC) / GeoEnviroPro Training Professionals; Darius Mali, Geosyntec Consultants, Inc.; Dr. Chase Holton, GSI Environmental Inc

Description

The course on Soil Vapour Intrusion – Evolution of Practices, Current Issues and Future Directions will cover the latest science, approaches, and methods for effective management of soil vapour intrusion at contaminated sites. Much work and progress has been made in the vapour intrusion practice over several decades including important learnings on conceptual site models and vapour attenuation and variability obtained from site data. Participants will learn about the strengths and limitations of current site screening approaches, refined assessment frameworks, preferential pathway investigations, and new tools and approaches for better outcomes. The implications and both positive aspects and limitations of current approaches for site screening will be discussed. Key issues for vapour intrusion mitigation including design considerations, optimization and monitoring will be covered. The course will conclude with identification of gaps and research needs and a panel discussion.

The goal of the course is to survey and summarize the key learnings and issues and future directions in vapour intrusion assessment and management drawing upon the expertise and knowledge of course facilitators, and current research and practice. It will present a cross-jurisdictional perspective considering the best available practices. The course is intended for anyone who would benefit from an immersive and state of the science review of vapour intrusion combined with practical approaches and tools to improve vapour investigations and mitigation.

Dr. Ian Hers is a Principal and Founder of Hers Environmental Consulting, Inc. and Partner with GeoEnviroPro Training Professionals. Dr. Hers is a recognized expert in soil vapour intrusion with over 35 years’ experience. He has developed guidance and conducted science reviews and applied research for federal, provincial, and state agencies/organizations in Canada and USA. He brings deep knowledge and practical experience to soil vapour assessment practice.

Darius Mali is a senior engineer in the vapour intrusion group at Geosyntec. He has over a decade of experience investigating contaminated sites and designing and installing vapour mitigation systems. He is a professional engineer in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia and a certified radon measurement and mitigation professional. He has participated in several national and international projects, ranging from residential projects in Ontario to working with the U.S. Navy on buildings more than million square feet. He is an expert in investigating vapour intrusion and indoor air quality monitoring, using techniques such as high-volume sampling, building pressure control, mass loading, and tracer tests. He is passionate about solving complex environmental problems and providing innovative solutions for his clients.

Dr. Chase Holton is a Senior Engineer with GSI Environmental Inc. with over 10 years of experience focused on vapour intrusion pathway assessment and mitigation. Dr. Holton has extensive experience addressing vapour intrusion associated with petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, methane, and emerging contaminants. He has written and contributed to vapor intrusion guidance for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Defense, Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council, and several U.S. and international state environmental regulatory agencies. He has authored over 20 peer-reviewed technical papers, serves as the chair of the ASTM subcommittee on vadose zone monitoring (D18.21.02), and is an Associate Editor for Groundwater Monitoring and Remediation.
